About Us Acumen Photography & Portraiture is a true family business. Proprietor and photographer Steve Brown has a total of over 20 years' professional photography experience. While portraiture and wedding photography have been his main focus, 20 years in the photography business has given him experience in all types of photography. In his early years Steve built up a strong presence in the Illawarra/Shoalhaven area, with wedding photography, portraiture and commercial photography, taking on school photography and Santa photos to add variety and challenge. After relocating to the NSW Blue Mountains, Steve continued with portraiture, wedding photography, commercial and event photography, as well as teaching photography and art, both privately and through the NSW TAFE system. So much diversity really honed Steve's skills in all types of photography, but after a few thousand weddings he decided to take a break from professional photography to explore other opportunities. Now, Steve returns to the professional photography business with a fresh outlook and renewed passion. A member of the Australian Photographic Society, Steve is not content to follow the same old formula and produce the conventional, technically correct type of photography that was so popular early in his career. In his return to professional photography, Steve's goal is to produce photographs that are as different and unique as the people he is photographing, using the extensive skills and technical knowledge developed during his years in the photography business. Working with Steve behind the scenes is his wife and partner Ruth. While Ruth's focus is usually on the less glamourous aspects of running a professional photography business — ordering, advertising, and website maintenance — she'll join Steve on a photo shoot at times, helping out when an extra pair of hands is needed to assist with lighting and equipment and watching for extra photographic possibilities.
